WHY ARE DAMS BUILT ON RIVERS ?

Dams provide water for  domestic(drinking ,cooking , bathing ,cooking and garden watering) , industry and irrigation purpose .
Dams help to generate hydroelectric power and also help in navigation .
Dams  and their reservoir also provide  recreation area for boating and fishing .
Dams help people by preventing floods .

Tehri Dam on Bhagirathi River , a tributary of Ganga . (Uttarakhand).It is the highest dam in India .

Hirakund dam  stands across Mahanadi (Orissa) is longest dam in India .

Bhakra Nangal Dam  stands across Sutlej river in Himachal Pradesh .
