2.Documentary on Western Ghats environment issues with solutions were shown.
The Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP), led by Madhav Gadgil, submitted a report to the Indian government in August 2011. The report recommended designating the Western Ghats as an Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) and proposed several measures to protect the region's environment.
*Key Recommendations:*
Divide the Western Ghats into three ESZs based on ecological sensitivity, with ESZ-1 having the highest priority and restrictions.
- *Ban on Activities*: Prohibit mining, quarrying, and sand mining in ESA.
- *Phase-out Plans*: Gradually phase out mining in ESZ-1 within five years, chemical pesticides in eight years, and plastic bags in three years.
- *Governance*: Establish a Western Ghats Ecology Authority under the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986, and promote community participation .
