PROTOZOA

Protozoa are single celled organisms. They come in many different shapes and sizes ranging from an Amoeba which can change its shape to Paramecium with its fixed shape and complex structure. They live in a wide variety of moist habitats including fresh water, marine environments and the soil.

Malaria. Malaria is the most significant of the protozoan parasites that infect man.

Where is protozoa found?Protozoa are found everywhere. They can live on their own as free-living organisms in the environment, often in the soil, water, or moss. They can also be resting cysts, which lets them survive through dry times. Some protozoa are parasites.

Many protozoan infections can be prevented. Modern sanitary methods can limit the contamination of food and water with the single-celled parasites, called protozoa, which cause the condition. If you are visiting an area known to have contaminated water, boil it before use to destroy any parasites.
